Student Chamber of the Council of the Higher Education Institutions
Student Chamber of the Council of the Higher Education Institutions (SK RVŠ) meets approximately 10 times a year for its regular sessions, which are most often held in Prague. These sessions are typically happening every month of the academic year. Several times a year, off-site meetings are also organized, offering the opportunity to explore the city where the university is located and where the event is happening. These events are supplemented by the meetings with sessions of working groups and committees, which are also supplemented by side programmes that allow students to broaden their horizons. Once a year, the SK RVŠ organizes the Conference of Academic Senators (KAS), to which all student senators from across the whole country are invited.
The Student Chamber addresses current issues in higher education primarily from the students’ perspective. It co-organizes events, issues statements and engages in discussions with representatives of the Government of the Czech Republic, the Ministry of Education, Youth and Sports, and other leaders in higher education.
At SK RVŠ meetings, individual universities are represented by their delegates or, if necessary, their alternates. SK RVŠ delegate should actively participate in Chamber meetings and contribute to the work of its bodies. At the same time, they should pass information to their academic senates and, on the contrary, submit questions or suggestions concerning their home university. If a delegate is unable to attend a meeting, they are fully represented by their alternate. In the situation in which both are present at an SK RVŠ meeting—which is highly desirable, as “two heads are better than one”—the delegate has the right to vote and the alternate has only an advisory vote. Of course, both of them are free to comment on the issues under discussion.
The Student Chamber has its own working groups and committees:
The Higher Education Self-Governance Committee addresses the development of the student role in academic senates and their cooperation with the Student Chamber of the Council of the Higher Education Institutions, as well as the financing of higher education and other economic and social aspects of student life.
The Doctoral Studies Committee advocates for the best possible conditions for doctoral students in the Czech Republic. It also actively collaborates with the Czech Association of Doctoral Researchers.
The Legislative Committee focuses on legal issues in higher education and on addressing the comments submitted by the Student Chamber of the Council of the Higher Education Institutions in regard with proposed legislative changes.
The Working group for International Affairs focuses on membership activities within the European Student Union (ESU) and the V4+ Alliance.
