Round Table on Legislation at Higher Education Institutions

On May 15, we met at Masaryk University for a Round Table on the topic of Legislation at Higher Education Institutions. Don’t be fooled — legislation doesn’t have to be a boring or gloomy topic at all. The Student Chamber, together with invited guests, prepared interactive workshops that helped students get their bearings in the legislative framework, discuss it openly, and, at the same time, learn something new.

Our host for the first and second seminars was prof. Radim Polčák, Vice-Rector for Development, Legislation, and Information Technology at Masaryk University. We looked at the process of drafting regulations at higher education institutions and at how the legislative process actually works, and we shared examples of good and bad practice from individual institutions. As a result, we now know what pitfalls we may encounter and what to watch out for as student senators or members of legislative committees.

After lunch, we took part in a workshop led by Mgr. Damir Solak, former Vice-Chair of the Student Chamber of the Council of Higher Education Institutions, who guided us through legislation from a student’s perspective. Students often find themselves lost in regulations, and are not always shown how to work with them. Damir therefore prepared a regulation that we could comment on ourselves, and as we worked through it, he advised us on what to watch out for and what to pay attention to the next time we have a regulation in hand.

At the close of the Round Table, together with Ondra Lokos, Chair of the SK RVŠ Legislative Committee, we addressed the topic of AI at higher education institutions: law, ethics, and responsibility. Ondra prepared case studies for the individual groups, covering problems that can arise in connection with AI at higher education institutions. This is a highly sensitive topic, widely discussed at higher education institutions, and so, working in groups, we came up with proposals for how to prevent similar problems and how to address individual situations.

The day at Masaryk University was full of discussions, workshops, and the sharing of experience among students. If you get the chance to take part next time, don’t hesitate — it would be a shame to miss out on the valuable advice, experience, and new perspectives on offer.
